Fighting the “killer virus” with pizza and cookies

As I shared last week, a local retirement home has been in quarantine for two weeks now. PSWs from other regions have been called in, the Armed forces are on site and… the pizza delivery boy’s busier than ever.

Yes, the irony. Announcements from inside the nursing home under corona siege are thanking people and businesses for sending baked goods and pepperoni pizza. This reminds me of Bill Maher questioning why frontline workers were given 18 million Krispy Kreme doughnuts in the spring. As I wrote about yesterday, eating real food is totally missing from public health solutions.

I even know dairy farmers who would avoid phlegm-producing milk and cheese when fighting a respiratory disease. Doubly-so for the processed goop found on top of pizza in a greasy takeout box. You don’t have to be an infectious disease control specialist to figure out that sugar-filled cookies and deep crust pizza are not the most preventive choices when dealing with an outbreak of a “killer virus.”

I’m not saying the residents and staff of nursing homes shouldn’t be able to eat whatever they want. Dine on vodka, steak and ice cream three times a day if you feel that’s best.

What I’m getting at is: Why force upon the rest of society unscientific and disproven methods — like masking, lockdown and social-distancing — when scientifically proven method of fighting disease — like a healthy diet and exercise in the fresh air — are being ignored?

As Drs. Reiss and Bhakdi say in Corona: False Alarm?, lifestyle education would likely lead to “fewer deaths from respiratory diseases, whereby a small virus would not break the camel’s back, because the back would not be strained to the breaking point.”
